Living in New York City for 20 years, I found it was much easier to fix things in our apartments myself instead of waiting for a super to do it. And I was always finding ways to upgrade my living spaces -which I didn't own and couldn't permanently change - which meant thinking creatively about how to make removeable changes and how to use small spaces to the fullest.

 

My wife and I purchased our own home in New Jersey eleven years ago and to save money I did all the repairs and upgrades myself, learning new skills along the way. I continued honing those skills (carpentry, drywall repair, painting, tiling) and started using them to help family and friends with their small upgrades and renovations.

So, yes, I can put together an IKEA shelving unit. Yes, I can repair a broken tile or repair a hole in your drywall (and repaint it if you want) But I can also give that bathroom an upgrade or give your kitchen a face lift, or even help you find a way to turn that small, unique space you may have into a storage area or a place to display art or keepsakes.
